VHS
EN RYO IDENTITY addresses the complexities of establishing and asserting a “biracial identity.” Filmmaker Paul Mayeda Berges also looks at mainstream media constructions of Asian American identity juxtaposed with Hollywood representations of Asians and interviews his Japanese American grandmother about her internment camp experiences. It is a demand for self-representation and a reclamation of history, language and anger.
“Mayeda Berges’s intense exploration challenges Asian Americans to break out of ‘en ryo’ (passivity), to create their own self-imagery. I loved its angry intelligence.”
