This poignant film is the story of Haru, a young Japanese American girl growing up in California’s Central Valley in the 1930s. She lives in a family that appears to be “pure Norman Rockwell.” Dealing with the loss of her collection of Japanese dolls leads Haru to understand what it means to be Japanese American and an immigrant’s daughter.
