Gurinder Chadha
Art & Performance, Women, World Wide Diaspora
This piece was made for Britain’s Channel 4 TV series, First Sex. By looking at four Indian women cabaret performers, director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice) explores who sets the agenda for comedy. Is it culturally specific or can anyone enjoy a joke regardless of race and ethnicity? With often hilarious performance clips, the film also questions what type of humor “makes it” onto television and to mainstream audiences. Does comedy in Britain always have to come from a white perspective to be taken seriously?
