Family, New Immigrants and Refugees (Past & Present), Women, Culture Clash, War
As the Vietnam War ended, many Hmong fled Laos, eventually resettling in the U.S. For Hmong women the life changes have been dramatic. In candid discussions, several women share their experiences and insight into the realities faced by Southeast Asian refugees and their children. The film highlights the challenges these women face, as they break from a traditional patriarchal family structure, enter U.S. education systems and find careers, reveal the complexity of situations (and decisions) created by societal and personal expectations.
This video is divided into topical segments, allowing teachers the flexibility to select segments of interest and incorporate them in their lesson plans throughout the school year. This structure allows the video to be used in many areas of study, including history, social and cultural studies and role modeling of women in higher education.
