This challenging work addresses issues of sexuality, subjectivity, tradition and identity in Asian gay contexts. With the “Tale of the Cut-Sleeve,” and a dream/thought-like visual style, Ming Ma creates a layered narrative exploring myth, language and desire. Stories from Chinese and Japanese history and from the contemporary experiences of three individuals are juxtaposed with texts by authors, including James Baldwin and Trinh T. Minh-ha, creating a sense of resonance and tradition.
