“Issei Wahine,” which means first-generation immigrant woman, looks at a fragment of labor and family history on Hawai’ian sugar plantations as told through the personal “talk stories” of Koma Kokubun, as revealed to her granddaughter. Her story is told through archival and personal photos, silent plantation footage, plantation work songs and Hawai’ian music.
